What Westporters may not know is the story behind this historical locale. The building was actually the headquarters of the Sports Car Club of America. Started in Westport in the early 1940’s, the SCCA was formed to be a member motorsports organization for both club and professional events. Actively involved was well-known American entrepreneur and sportsman Briggs Cunningham. Cunningham was featured on the cover of Time magazine, owned the 1st Ferrari, built the Chrysler C-4R racing car, competed in a 24 hour auto race called Le Mans, and held an American Cup title from 1958. He was married to Lucy Bedford, daughter of Standard Oil heir F.T. Bedford, also notable members of the Westport community. Now 60,000 members strong, the SCCA is located in Topeka, Kansas after 30 years in Denver, Colorado.

Leifer Properties sponsors the Westport Historical Society Annual Holiday House Tour

As a 38 year sponsor of the Westport Historical Society, Leifer Properties is committed to supporting prominent and meaningful organizations in town. Founded in 1889, this organization works to educate, preserve and celebrate the history of Westport, Connecticut.

This past weekend, Leifer Properties sponsored their annual holiday house tour on December 10, 2017, which highlighted homes that showcase how modern families can adapt historic properties for 21st Century living. Honoring the 31st anniversary of this event, these 18th and 19th Century homes were on view with beautiful seasonal decor. To create a memorable holiday experience for the near 400 guests, there was also an opportunity for local shopping, treats such as hot cider and cookies, and festive music. It is also heartening to see that some of the wonderful tenants at Leifer Properties, such as The Tailored Home, were sponsors of this worthy Westport event.

In 1979, Leifer Properties won the Historical Preservation Award for saving, renovating, and converting the Assumption Church’s former convent building on Riverside Avenue into Westport’s first condominiums. This came to fruition after a proposal to the Planning and Zoning Commission that condominium ownership would be a good idea for Westport to adopt, especially to preserve larger historically significant older structures, such as what became The Convent Condominiums.

Over the years, the company has been awarded the Post Road Beautification Award and the Westport Society’s Historical Preservation Award six subsequent times for various adaptive repurposing renovation projects on Sylvan Road South, Imperial Avenue, and Church Lane.

“We are fortunate to live in a town with such rich history, including when George Washington stopped in at the then Disbrow Tavern on Church Lane in 1775 on his way South during the Revolution. Local Artist Drew Klotz featured at Leifer Properties

Leifer Properties proudly features artwork by Fairfield County artist Drew Klotz, whose early interest in the aerodynamics of flight directed his creative talents to unique kinetic sculptures. Drew’s artwork caught the eye of Roger Leifer about 8 years ago while he was visiting the Bruce Museum Art Show in Greenwich with his sculptor friend Gary Trazek (Kineticsteelcom). After viewing Drew’s brightly painted high quality enamel kinetic sculptures revolve and dance with the wind, he felt these works of art would look great in front of some of his properties and also wanted to provide public artwork for Westporters to enjoy as they travel around town.

To find the perfect visible locations for the works Drew would design, Roger toured some of his properties with Drew and his wife, fine artist Audrey Moffley Klotz. Joining them on this tour were Gary Trazek from Miami and Jim Martin ( from California, artist friends whose work he already owns.

Drew had one work that consisted of circles on both ends of 2 rotating swiveling arms, and Roger asked if he could re-design that particular piece to be displayed at Leifer Properties medical center, The Willows, on Kings Highway North. Drew did some sketches with female and male symbols, fabricated the piece, and installed it at the location. Then an amazing thing happened. Approximately 6 months later, Yale Fertility Center ( was looking for a location in Westport, and decided on The Willows. Roger now believes, “If you build it, they will come!” With the male and female symbols dancing in the wind in front of their center, you have the miracles of modern science in the shadow of Drew Klotz’s whimsical sculpture.

Over the years, Roger has received many positive comments about Drew’s work from tenants at all his locations as well as Westport residents and visitors to town. Westport is a community that truly values art and design, and Leifer Properties is proud to bring more public outdoor highly visible works of “Happy Art”.​

Leifer Properties along with David Adam Realty purchase of Sconset Square

This past summer Leifer Properties, along with David Adam Realty, purchased Sconset Square in downtown Westport. Once known as Sherwood Square, the location is centered around a parking lot on Myrtle Avenue and has some of the community’s most desirable décor boutiques and one sophisticated french bistro. Notable tenants include Bungalow, HB Home, Swoon, The Concept Gallery / Kerri Rosenthal, White Birch Studio, and Le Penguin. Being one of the town’s premier interior design destination, it is no surprise we are committed to maintaining the highest quality aesthetic. Our recent installation of beautiful fall ‘mums’ and freshly painted bright blue benches outside the restaurant create a welcoming environment to those shopping in the square or strolling down Post Road. While our commitment to impeccable landscaping and structural improvements is strong, the flagpole from a yacht owned by former owner B.V. Brooks will keep its noteworthy spot. Sconset Square will remain an important locale to work, shop and dine in downtown Westport.

Leifer Properties Welcomes Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Foundation to Westport

The Hole in the Wall Foundation, founded by former Westporter Paul Newman, funds and supports camps for seriously ill children around the world. It recently relocated into Leifer Properties’ building located at 228 Saugatuck Avenue. The Foundation, which had previously been based in New Haven, CT, found its ideal new headquarters location overlooking the water at Indian River Green, a minute walk from the Westport Metro North Station and steps to the I-95 access point. Leifer Properties customized the space, with perimeter window walls in every office and a large Boardroom, for their requirements, including the installation of a full kitchen, and up to date IT facilities. This tenancy brought full circle the relationship between the two organizations, as Roger Leifer worked with Paul Newman four years ago building Newman’s first and only restaurant, The Dressing Room, adjacent to the Westport Playhouse. Last year the Hole in the Wall Camps helped out over 400,000 children around the world, bringing joy and hope to those suffering from cancer and other serious illnesses.

Leifer Properties Installs State of the Art Climate Controls

leifer-properties-installs-climate-controlIn an effort to improve the functioning and efficiency of the heating and cooling systems in its properties, Leifer Properties is completing a revamping of the HVAC plants in a number of its properties. This will provide a more comfortable environment for tenants, allow the Property managers to monitor performance and comfort for an improved office and retail experience.

Working with Tri-Star Services and in cooperation with the Connecticut Light and Power Company, Leifer Properties is in the final stages of installing and compleing state of the art gas furnaces, controls, and radio thermostats that wirelessly talk to each other and to the central station. This allows Leifer Properties staff to view the Main Chiller and Boilers status, the actual temperatures in each tenant space, adjust the heating and cooling setpoints, and be aware of any systems’ components which are not functioning properly. Tenant spaces are pre-cooled or heated, as the season requires, so that there are set to the tenant’s comfort level before they arrive at work, and are setback at the end of the workday, weekends and holidays in order to conserve energy and expenses. After hours overrides are no problem.

The entire buildings HVAC environment is accessible by internet anywhere in the world and are monitored in live time on Leifer Properties staff’s Iphones and Ipads- an amazing technological advancement.

These advanced systems are presently operational in a number of Leifer Properties and are receiving accolades from tenants, managers and the utility company executives. Additional properties are being converted to Facility Explorer manufactured by Johnson controls, with new Mod-Com boiler on-demand installations.
